Doublet SS22 Collection: “My Way”

Masayuki Ino, designer of Doublet, creates with the intention of starting conversations and rebelling from the norm. Doublet’s SS22 Collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week this past weekend, does just that. The whimsical and playful collection incorporated fruit and vegetable-inspired designs and contrasted sullen earth tones with more vivid, bright colors. Yet, this collection is more than initially meets the eye.

The featured garments included collared blouses, oversized blazers, trench coats, and an array of knitwear — but these pieces have intriguing backstories. Ino utilized eccentric and extremely detailed processes to create the materials that made up these pieces. Much of the clothing was dyed using liquid extracted from food and plant waste and included threads originating from banana stalks and milk protein.

Much of the clothing was dyed using liquid extracted from food and plant waste and included threads originating from banana stalks and milk protein. Ino did not just stop there. Models also exhibited leather jackets and slacks, made using a unique mushroom cultivation technique, excess thread from knit and sock factories was reworked into mohair-blended sweaters, and a combination of other unprecedented technologies were employed to craft this innovative attire.

Doublet’s new collection doesn’t follow the rules — it designates its own rules. Ino created an environmentally-friendly collection that was not only influenced by the natural world, but it lets nature’s resources take center stage.

In the wake of significant challenges including the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war which has heavily impacted production and logistics, Syndicate continues to innovate by integrating themes of survival, resilience, and the complex emotions involved in modern relationships. The collection features bold, thematic elements such as textual prints derived from real-life break-up phrases embodying the irony and emotional depth of contemporary dating narratives.

Some of the collection prints were created in collaboration with Magalie Heroux — a London-based graphic designer, the "Dating Olympics" collection employs a mix of early 2000s aesthetics with simple, impactful fonts and ironic slogans, capturing a nostalgic yet fresh vibe. The use of heat-reactive techniques further enriches the tactile experience, emphasising the warmth and connection that are essential to human interaction.

With this collection, Syndicate not only addresses the hardships faced by many due to the current geopolitical situation but also celebrates the enduring human spirit to love and connect, even in times of adversity. The "Dating Olympics" is more than a fashion statement—it's a testament to the resilience and adaptability of love.
