Gaultier’s Garden of Eden

To celebrate the launch of JPG's "Flowers" collaboration with The Webster, the Paris-based team flew out to New York. Even Kylie Jenner, the face of the campaign, made an appearance with her daughter Stormi to honor the event, especially fitting with her JPG look from the Met Gala the night before. I’ll admit, I got too distracted by the fish swimming around and didn’t notice her walk right past me. The most notable facet of the night was the diversity of fashion at the party, definitely not as strict as Anna Wintour may be with her guests’ looks (but who knows considering Jared Leto's get-up).

Despite being among JPG pinstripe sets, feathers and fishnets, Mugler and other symbols of luxury, the punk spirit of Gaultier remained. No one turned up any noses at my Goodwill outfit, amateurily-tailored jeans, and Halloween City jewelry. If anything, I was told that it was all “very Gaultier,” — my leather tie, safety pins, the chains on my pants, and the black nails that I had to dry on the train.

The Flowers collection is characterized by its genius combination of mesh, colorful graphics, and body-hugging silhouettes. And with cheeky ‘body prints’ on shirts, Gaultier continues to aid in the reconstruction of the fashion world. This latest collection calls upon famous French conceptual artists — namely, Marcel Duchamp — in a truly punk interpretation of high fashion that is anything but pretentious.
