Givenchy Evolves Tradition in their Latest Menswear Collection

Akin to an optical illusion, the runway down which Givenchy Fall/Winter 2023 collection came was a bright white box. In and out of this box spiraled the remnants of an all-American trope — utilitarian cargo pants, grungy tartan prints, teenage pastels and mix-and-match layering. It was clear that the iconic label's Creative Director, Matthew Williams, created this collection for Men's Fashion Week in Paris this week as an ode to pushing tradition forward.

Bespoke processes including radical cutting, fabric treatments and intricate decorations depict the hanging-by-a-thread characters in Givenchy with destructive details as a gesture their personalities. Bleached denim skirts and faded hooded sweatshirts yanked tightly around layered, baggy pants or suspended from the waist demonstrate the collection's impulsive, rebellious line-up.

The classic archetype of four black suits designed in the Haute Couture atelier are a byproduct of impulsive modification. “The customization of dress codes takes form in tailoring defiantly un-hemmed at the seams, allowing for an unravelling process that elongates the physique,” the press release said. “The technique triggers a study of volumes that spill out–disobeying the tucked-in tradition–in looks layered to achieve the maximum effect of the idea.” With intent to update classic suits to more recent mentalities, Givenchy proposed a dressing culture founded on an individualistic approach to formal wear executed with “ease and confidence” to evolve tradition.

In the wake of significant challenges including the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war which has heavily impacted production and logistics, Syndicate continues to innovate by integrating themes of survival, resilience, and the complex emotions involved in modern relationships. The collection features bold, thematic elements such as textual prints derived from real-life break-up phrases embodying the irony and emotional depth of contemporary dating narratives.

Some of the collection prints were created in collaboration with Magalie Heroux — a London-based graphic designer, the "Dating Olympics" collection employs a mix of early 2000s aesthetics with simple, impactful fonts and ironic slogans, capturing a nostalgic yet fresh vibe. The use of heat-reactive techniques further enriches the tactile experience, emphasising the warmth and connection that are essential to human interaction.
