High Fashion with Sundae School
Directed by Dae Lim, “Let There Be Light” was a multi-sensory runway experience entombed in psychedelic light projections, with “cannabis couture” looks made to represent the special ways that New Yorkers “find their light.”
With 20 different one-of-a-kind looks, all of the New York icons were represented. Personified through careful curation, the “highs” of living in New York City strut their way through the House of Cannabis. The Statue of Liberty shared a runway with a Depop micro-influencer. A Wall Street trashbag passed an NYC Marathoner.
Some of the most notable moments included the clear plastic bikini made to look like bags of herb, the MTA map gown, the glizzy pants, and the streetwear Statue of Liberty wearing a crown of turquoise Pax vapes. The closing look, an elevated graduation gown inspired by Hanbok Chima (한복치마), ended the show with an ode to the Korean women who raised the Sundae School team.
Sundae School’s all-Korean combines classic aspects of Korean culture and garment construction with the camp and kitsch of New York characters. The collection is a cheeky decadent display of in-your-face comedy, purposefully contrasting New York stoner and Korean culture. “Let There Be Light” is designed to make you smile.
