Interview

What is your ideal office?

Lots of windows, high ceilings, magically self-cleaning.

What idea has made a remarkable impression on you?

“You don’t find the objects, the objects find you.” Philosophy of design learned from years of thrift shopping.

What grosses you out?

Bad coffee, mean people, gentrification.

How would you like to be remembered?

For making weird and beautiful things.

What is your most treasured belonging?

A Hole T-shirt I’ve had since I was fourteen.

What is one career highlight that sticks out to you?

My whole career really feels like a highlight. I get to wake up every day and do what I love, with people that I love and respect.

What would you do if you went blind?

That’s tough. My whole life is built around looking and seeing. I hope I’d be able to find a new way of engaging with the world.

What is your favorite material?

Plaster, plastic, plywood, glass, carpet, plants, seashells...I can’t play favorites.

You wake up in jail—how’d you end up here, man?

I must have time-traveled back to my misspent youth.

What is the most beautiful word in the English language?

Please.

What is one person or thing you’d like to banish from the earth?

Tourists. Maybe not from the earth but definitely from my neighborhood.
