NFT Crash Course: Introduction to NFTs with Aidan Cullen

How he heard about NFTS:

A friend of mine dropped a project called Creature World. We had been following each other for like four years and his was doing really well so I started having some conversations with him about how to succeed in the realm of NFTs.

Before I even spoke to him I called five friends that all came to my house and just for three weeks we like sat around my dining room table brainstorming project ideas. We worked on it every day and slowly it became more and more formulated and cohesive. Then once we had really fleshed out what we wanted the project to be we went to as many people we knew who worked within the NFT space and started getting as much advice as possible. I began reading, being on of crypto Twitter, NFT, Twitter, finding people and communities on Discord, which is like twitter mixed with Reddit specifically for NFTs and Crypto.

Getting into NFTs:

It really began when I got into cryptocurrency around a year, maybe a year and a half ago. I really began to look into Ethereum and following that, then I finally bought some and looked at it every day. For the next six to nine months I read about it, listened to podcasts, and began following crypto people on twitter. I became really interested in decentralized finance and the blockchain and how its beneficial for people, but particularly how it benefits artists.

I am a freelance artist and so there would be moths where I was struggling to pay rent because several companies were 3 months behind on paying me, and that’s the great thing about NFTs and Crypto, everything is written in a digital contract so payments can’t be late because it’s all within the smart contract.

Explaining the Blockchain:

So the blockchain is a layer of code that like every transaction can be traced back to. If I sell you something it's in code forever, then if you resell what I sold you that transaction gets added into the blockchain and I can see when you sold it and how much you sold it for and which address you sent it to. It's just a way to trace all of these interactions. It’s pretty much like a bank statement but it tracks any movement that is made using crypto currency.

When you make an NFT you make a smart contract, we had someone make one specifically for Hearts, but there are certain sites that will make one for you if you don’t have someone to do the code for you. So once we upload a Heart and then someone will mint that NFT, which is basically just buying it, but we will see that transaction take place on the blockchain. Now if that person were to sell their Heart, once their transaction goes through we will automatically get a certain percentage of that sale because it’s written into our smart contract and that lives on the blockchain.

How collectibles and art end up on the Blockchain (explaining the process / how much it cost to mint your NFT / what websites and programs to use):

To upload an NFT you would go onto one of the big seller sites. There are several but one of the main ones is called OpenSea. So for example, if you wanted to mint an NFT on OpenSea you would have to first pay the gas fee. The gas fee changes every day depending on how many people are currently using the interface. Once you pay the gas fee you can upload your NFT and from there you can set a price and then people will buy it.

The process of making 'The Hearts Project':

It was really just a huge group effort. Me and some friends sat in my kitchen for weeks just throwing out ideas and seeing what stuck. We also wanted to think about what we wanted the project to turn into. We wanted it to be something that allowed for growth, an ever evolving community project, not just one thing that came out then was left to sit.

Cultivating a community through collectibles:

A really cool thing about NFTs is that they can be used like a code. Especially when things start transferring into the MetaVerse owning an NFT will be like an all access pass for concerts, events, things like that. It will move from Twitter and Discord and become a really interactive place where people can come together.

Creating a collection:

It really just starts with an idea. And the thing about NFTs is that they can be as big or small as you want. You can do a massive 10,000 NFT drop like hearts, or you can just upload a drawing you made onto OpenSea or one of the other NFT sites and try and sell it. Again, building a community is important so no mater what you’re trying to sell you’re going to want to have spent time within chats to make people want to buy your work. NFTs are filed by demand. The more people want your work, the more people want to be a part of the community you’re creating, the better you’re going to do.

Getting people to notice:

The best way to get people to buy your NFT is to get people to care about what you’re making. We did that by creative a Discord, Twitter and Instagram. Once that was done we began to follow people who had a good understanding of the NFT world and also projects that we thought were cool. You have to start building a community, find people with similar intreats and talk to them. We are constantly asking the Hearts community what they think of our new ideas, we get feedback and actually listen. People like to feel like they are a part of something, I feel like the best NFTs are the ones that have build a foundation and continue to cultivate it even as they grow.

Becoming a contributor/ 'Hearts' owner:

We really value the opinions of the community that we’ve built and want people who own Hearts to be able to have a voice in the kinds of projects that we work on. To own a Heart you have to just get one when we do a drop, nothing crazy. We are going to start doing some exclusive things for Heart owners thought, so if you own a Heart though you will have access to events that we are going to begin putting on.

So we first released 10,000 Heart NFTs. No two were the same, but some were more rare than others. We had our designer create all these different attributes, then we created a code and so there are never two Hearts that are exactly alike. We have just started to create special things that a Heart owner can get, we are trying to put together events and things like that so basically that would mean that the only way to attend the event is to show that you have a Heart.

Explaining ownership:

The way that you own crypto is by getting a crypto wallet. For example you could get a Meta Mask which is a type of crypto wallet where you can have different kinds of currency, NFTs, etc. You can either link you credit card or you can buy it on a site called CoinBase, but it will all live within you wallet which lives either on your phone or in your Google Chrome browser.

Explaining sentences like: The “Heart” character has 235 unique attributes which have been plugged into a computer generated AI with the possibility of creating over a trillion different combinations.

Luke Davis, our developer, built an AI generative script where we put in all the attributes that our designer Stephen drew, gave it a set of rules, gave it a rarity structure, which is basically just saying this color of this set of hands are going to be more rare than the others, and then the computer actually generated the hearts that you see. So it's fully computer generated art from assets that Steph drew. Then we just decided for the first drop we were gonna do 10,000 of those.

How you can use NFTs for good:

Our huge goal is to foster a platform that elevates artist’s voices that may have never had the proper opportunity to get their vision into the world. Not only are we partnering with some of the most established artists so our community can learn from them, we’re making projects with those people and the heart project has shared ownership in them, allowing the project to bring some funds to the community Wallet. Those funds will primarily be used to fund more community projects, helping artists find their footing in the creative world. Sometimes you need $10k to make that short film that you’ve always wanted to and that’s the catalyst to your career.

On the charity front, Every 1-2 months we have a community vote on where we donate some $ from our profits. We typically like to give the community some options that are specific to charitable things in the creative world. Ex. Teaching kids from underprivileged backgrounds how to use photoshop & creative tools, supplying schools who can’t afford art supplies with resources and supplies, a diversity in the tech and art world initiative etc. We’ve had some great conversations with some organizations that we intend to have more of a long term partnership with In the meantime we’re working on setting up a 501(c)(3) entity so we can properly have a charity arm to what we’re doing.
