office spoke with Juliann on the direction of the project and its centering of intersectional feminism. She described the focus of the piece to be about “empowering women and femmes to be strong, gender non-conforming and/or feminine if they chose to be.” The story of the piece, according to Juliann, is about showing the different sides of the model Alakiir. “I also wanted Alakiir to have a male counterpart,” said Juliann. “Val represents a part of her alter ego.
For the styling process, Juliann choose looks that would draw contrasts with the overpowering vastness of the setting. She said, “I tried to create elevated and conceptualized looks to juxtapose the natural backdrop. I primarily wanted the lighting to be darker in the background and mainly focus on the models to highlight and make them look powerful almost as if they are emerging from the photos.”
Juliann prioritized inclusion and intersectionality in the narrative of the shoot. “Black and Indigenous women are so often left out of the conversation or narratives of the fashion industry,” said Juliann. “And it's always a priority for me to put BIPOC—especially women and femmes—at the forefront of my fashion work as well as other projects I work on."
