Bethlehem is Obsessing and Confessing in Her New EP

Describe Bethlehem in 3 words.

Maximal, Fierce, Cunt.

Why kill off your previous alias, Venetta?

I’ll always be a DJ. I wanted to release music under a name I love. My name is Bethlehem, and it’s too blessed to sleep on.

Confess something.

I love being misunderstood & underestimated.

What do Bethlehem and NYC have in common?

Both are DD’s. Don Divas

What does it mean to be a Doom Pop anti-hero?

It started as a joke. I was making loud, manic, all-over-the-place pop and “anti-hero” sounded funny. It’s ridiculous and dramatic for no reason.

Some artists you’re influenced by are Skinny Puppy and M.I.A. Tell me about why their music hits for you, especially in regards to the making of this EP.

I’m a sample queen and my process is chaotic and very maximalist. I try to fit everything in, even if it doesn’t make sense.

Skinny Puppy are very important to me and I love how minimal their process is, just drums, samples, restraint. The rhythm is obsessive; you can feel a drummer’s mind behind it, which is how I think about music too. M.I.A. has that same sensibility, especially in her DIY, collage-like way of working with different samples. They both treat sampling like structure, not decoration.

To seduce or to be seduced?

Seduce. Power is hotter when I’m holding it.

What are you obsessed with right now?

Dreams and sober altered states. Being back in Ethiopia has brought my dreams back intensely. I work with altered states through Transcendental Meditation— dreaming is the most unsanctioned one.

Which track on the EP was the most experimental for you?

Click Code Vice. I was in sound design at the time and just pulled a bunch of foley and found sound I’d recorded, and honestly treated it more like a video game score than an actual pop song.

Tell me one of your favorite lyrics on the EP.

“Hotel nights & getaway places, putting down my personal spaces.”
