Chitose Abe on UGG x sacai’s FW25 Collection

sacai is built on themes of hybridization and juxtaposition; taking two things seemingly different in nature and merging them to birth something entirely new. Where did this fascination originate for you?

When I was a child, I disliked that everyone wore the same uniform. My mother

often made my clothes at home with her sewing machine, so I used to enjoy modifying my uniform—like turning the sleeves into puffed ones. I think this idea of “something familiar, yet new” connects to sacai’s signature language of hybridization.

In line with fusing two identities into one, how does this collaboration with UGG illuminate the personality of sacai?

By combining sacai’s hybrid silhouettes with the comforting wearability of UGG, the collaboration fuses both brands’ DNA, resulting in a pair that seamlessly integrates into people’s everyday lives.

sacai has had a longstanding run of iconic collections with brands like Carhartt WIP, Nike, etc. How does this collection with UGG traverse new terrain?

Actually, this is our second collaboration with UGG—the first was back in 2018. The reason we continue to collaborate with brands like NIKE and Carhartt WIP is that we always maintain mutual respect for each other. UGG is the same. This naturally led to our second collaboration. We call them our friends.

The line features boots and shoes that bring the world of practicality into the world of indulgence. Stretches of fur and metal buckles add edge and ornamentation to these winter essentials. How were you able to maintain balance in the shoes’ character?

Since shoes are meant to be worn, ease of walking is essential. For the loafers, we used sacai’s coin loafer silhouette as a base while keeping the lightweight warmth unique to UGG materials. The Thing High Boots feature sacai’s iconic hybrid design, expressed through a metal buckle. We were able to preserve the shoe’s functionality while creating a completely new silhouette.

Your journey into the fashion world was one fueled by patience, persistence, and innovation, carefully learning the ins and outs before assuming full creative autonomy. How were you able to transmute these ideals into your work over the years, and specifically into these pieces?

I’ve always aimed to keep evolving. Collaborators—whom I call our friends—often lead me to new discoveries, and there’s a genuine joy in creating new pieces together. That’s why they, including UGG, are so important to us.

How does this venture further expand the universe you created with sacai’s Fall 2025 Where the Wild Things Are?

For our Fall/Winter 2025 collection, we took “Where The Wild Things Are” as our starting point, and designed the show so that the clothes, the models’ hairstyles, and even their walking all conveyed a sense of being “wild.” When I was thinking about the concept for this season, UGG naturally came to mind. Incorporating their shoes felt essential. As a result, it became a season where we were able to fully express the concept.
