Daylight Savings
Photographer Stephen Velastegui, who's had work in i-D, Gayletter, and BRICK Magazine, brings more of his work to office with “Daylight Savings.” The editorial conveys the feeling of being struck with a life of free movement, reminded of what it felt like to dress up in the winter time before Covid. You’re not intimidated by the frigidity of New York winter, because you know you’re making winter look good.
Stephen describes the energy of this stunt to me as, “Really busy and really bitchy.” He aims to show the empowerment involved in women taking control of their finances through their sexuality. “They are confident in themselves,” he says, “and take self-presentation very seriously, even if it means dressing inappropriately for the weather or sacrificing practicality.”
When directing the models in the shoot, he wanted to capture the attention of Canal St. “They know all eyes are on them,” he says, “but they expect it.” Maybe with these works, we can imagine winter in New York without the pandemic. We can be those passerbyers, witnessing the beauty of going out in New York when it’s below freezing, wishing, waiting, for when we can go back out with somewhere to go.
