Dead of Night
And while we wait for more contagious singles like "Dead of Night," office wanted to find out more about the mysterious mask-wearing artist. Read our interview, below.
What do you do?
I make music.
Where were you born?
I don’t really remember. But I’ve lived a whole lotta places—California, New York, Canada, Africa, London.
Where do you live now?
I don’t really like to settle anywhere for too long, so I’m always kind of here and there. But I’ve recently been hanging my hat in Toronto.
What's your favorite album front to back?
Either Patti Smith’s Horses or Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation.
What are five albums everyone needs to listen to before they die?
That’s too few. But I think variety is good, so I would say: Neil Young Harvest; Hole Live Through This; Whitney Houston Whitney; Descendents Milo Goes To College; and Paris Hilton Paris.
Lately, what song have you been listening to on repeat?
I’m always, like, a couple months behind on current music, but I’ve been listening to that Cardi B song I Like It at the gym a lot.
Johnny Cash or Joy Division?
Definitely Johnny Cash. I don’t mind Joy Division, but I’m more of a New Order guy.
Cowboy boots or a Cowboy Hat?
Hat. Always.
If you could collaborate with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
Well, most of my idols are dead, so it would be unfair to pick just one of them. Alive, though, would have to be: Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson or Lana.
What's with the leather mask always covering your face?
I don’t want to distract people with my beauty.
How do you describe your sound?
Country gambling dusty hustler.
What do you want people to take away from your music?
I honestly feel like I’m just telling my own stories, and although they are very personal to me, a lot of different people have the same ones. I think people relate to my music because of that—mine might be told a bit different than theirs but they really are right there singing theirs along with me, you know?
What are you working on right now?
I’ve just finished recording my debut full length album, which I’m real happy about.
What's next for Orville Peck?
I’ve got a lot of really exciting things coming up. I wish I could talk about them more, but all will be revealed pretty soon.
