Khruangbin's Leap With Mordechai

Lee had been feeling a similar twinge of disconnection back in 2019 when she found herself hiking with her new friend, Mordechai, and his family. The journey there contrasted itself against Lee's fast-paced life after Khruangbin found success. Once they arrived, Mordechai convinced Lee to leap into the water. She fell in the air as he cried out, "Laura Lee Ochoa!" It's Lee's full name, one that she had just taken from her grandfather. Comparing her liberating dive to a baptism, she held onto the moment.

With the idea proposed by Lee, Khruangbin ended up naming the new album after Mordechai — and with his approval, of course.

Lee had initially wanted the album to be a surprise for her friend, but she soon realized that she would have to ask him. “I didn't think it would be fair to him to name the album with his name without his blessing,” she says while chuckling. “It was a really funny conversation. I don't know how many times in the world somebody gets a phone call from a new friend saying, ‘I’ve made my album out to you. Is that alright?’”

The band is notably private, appearing in only a few of their own music videos and even wearing wigs to separate their private life from their professional ones. However, the latest album beautifully highlights the band’s development with a majority of the songs possessing vocals from all three members—something that Khruangbin has not been known to do in the past. "I threw words at the wall, and everybody kind of liked where the words were going," says Lee.

The most energetic of their three albums, the record sees each track synergizing to create a harmonious and soulful end product. Mordechai is yet another testament to the band’s enduring ability to weave global influences into their songs, drawing musical inspiration from Pakistan, Korea, India, and West Africa. Lee says that Speer is typically the one to source out and bring new genres to her and Johnson's attention, but all three members make a continuous effort to expand one another's musical exposure. "Maybe some of it's intentional, but a lot of it's just subconscious. It's like when I lived in England, I ended up speaking with a different inflection after a period of time, because if you surround yourself with something, it will start to slip into your own creativity," says Lee.

The band's devoted fans may find themselves wondering what's next for the trio, but they're keeping their plans open. “None of us even anticipated quitting our normal nine-to-five to be in a band that no one can pronounce,” says Lee. But perhaps one of the best places to start is honing in on what Lee has been listening to lately: Iranian love songs.
