Basic.space Launches New Campaign Video

In a conversation between Juliet Johnstone and Angelnumber8, the two artists discuss their creative processes, and how marketing their work on Basic.Space impacts those practices, going forward. Read the interview and watch the new campaign video with Johnstone and Angelnumber8 below.

Can you share more on what your creative medium is and how you hone in on your practice?

JULIET JOHNSTONE— While painting is my main medium, I wear many creative hats in my studio. I design clothes, creative direct, style, make all my graphics, dabble in photography, etc. There is no limit, which is how I like it. “Own the future” is the underlying theme of this video.

ANGELNUMBER8— I express myself through music, writing, clothing design, and also building furniture with EA Design Studio. I feel like my creative medium is fluid in how they all lend each other a hand when it comes to inspiration. Emotionally, I feel they are all connected and very similar. Whether it's me writing Digital Tribal, or my poetry book-- they give me the same feeling of my new favorite boots or the satisfying feeling of interesting shapes. My medium is not only what I work with but what makes me happy.

As artists, was there a specific moment when you realized it was necessary to take hold of your own creative agency? How did you push through the industry to where you are today?

JJ— As an artist, there has never been a moment where I realized I needed to take hold of my creative power - that comes naturally and is the point of being an artist. As a business owner, there was for sure a moment where I realized I needed to nurture the power of my creative agency. There have been multiple instances of people thinking they know better (men specifically), but luckily I am learning to trust myself. I am learning how to navigate this industry, but I think the most important thing to learn is to stay true to yourself, know your worth, and treat others with kindness. Kind people win.

A8— I’m blessed to be a part of this shift in culture. I feel like each generation moves further and further in getting what makes them the most uncompromised and the “own the future” theme relates to that. I think that experience is important and no one deserves to be held back from that opportunity due to circumstance--and that's a part of nature and how it is unfortunately. But what’s rooted much deeper is that we are actually the seed. There's no pretty flower without the seed. In this case, without the artist there is no art. Understanding that helped me put my foot forward first and take hold of my own craft. Standing on my own values also has helped me meet people who also share some of the same values and has navigated me to where I am today.

In a decentralized community like Basic.Space, you're given full creative control over how you present yourself and your work to the world. How do you approach such a limitless opportunity, and does it differ from your previous artistic outlets?

JJ— The way in which I work is super natural to me. I prefer to work without limits, and can’t picture myself ever working differently.

A8— It’s great because with Basic.Space I don’t have to approach it much differently than how I would if I was personally releasing art into the world. The creative control is really yours and that’s necessary when trying to represent your art in the world. Basic.Space gets that.

How has gaining control of your own intellectual property through this type of decentralized community driven your craft and creativity forward?

JJ— As I grow with my brand, hopefully the creative outlets that I have access to will also grow.

A8— Having this control through this type of community has given me more motivation because I know that any crazy ass idea I have, Basic.Space is ready to listen.  And it’s motivating to know that there’s a platform that’s willing to team up, provide resources and help make ideas bigger. Having that in the back of my mind helps me think of more ways people can #DiTRi
