Angèle's «Paysage Sonore»
Though music is her main medium and focus, she often gets caught up in the legacy of perception. What she should be doing and what's expected of her has always come at a cost— even what becomes inevitable as a woman — activism. The politics of her life are often found in the mix of her music, and whether she welcomes it or not, in this moment it becomes a non-factor. What she wears [even though she reigns as an iconic Chanel girl], who she dates, where she goes, and what her family does remains irrelevant and drowns in the reminiscence of her sound that begs to be listened to.

Can you cite some of your early music inspirations?
I used to listen to a lot of romantic music. I loved a singer called Helene Segara (we can qualify her as a French Barbara Streisand), I was the only one listening to this kind of music in my school. But, I was literally obsessed.
Who do you wish could sing you a lullaby to sleep?
Chet Baker — I fall in love too easily
Can you name the song or album that made you want to pursue music?
I think it must be “Random access memories” from Daft punk.

What was your first song called?
When I was 15, I wrote this embarrassing song called “like the sun." I think it was cute, but so cheesy..
What would you tell your younger self about that first song and making music?
Keep going, try to stay as positive as you can, keep in mind that this is only music. This is only about making people dance and sing, about giving them some joy. Try to focus on this and not on the negative comments or reactions.

Can you take us on the sonic landscape (univers musical / paysage sonore) you’re trying to create when making music?
It is made of a lot of any kind of synthetiser, pianos, wurlitzer. I am always creating a safe space around me, because I have to be surrounded by good energy to be creative. Sometimes inspiration comes from a bad experience, but when its about playing or singing, I have to be sure i’m in the right energy. If the lyrics I am writing are intimate, it's even more important to feel comfortable.
What does cool mean to you?
I think it's something that we cannot create or invent. Unfortunately, and for me, being cool could only mean that you're in the right place. That you are where you want to be, no matter how you’re dressed, who are the people around you. As long as you know who you are, and where you go, I think you’re cool. Being cool is about not wanting validation from the outside, I guess.
