We’ve never been so hype for the end of the world, and Marine Serre might have something to do with that. Entitled “Radiation," the label’s Fall 2019 collection can only be described as post-apocalyptic rave-wear—equal parts frightening and frighteningly alluring.

Serre operates in the aesthetic realm that exists between the darkness and the light, forging unique 'fits that resonate as strongly with the kinky as they do with the environmentally-conscious, and she brought this same spectrum of depth to this doomsday-inspired collection. Accordingly, the designer doubled-down on the upcycling, incorporating recycled elements in more than half the looks, from the vintage jewelry that dangled off the final ensemble—a killer black lycra dress—to a pair of jeans emblazoned with her signature crescent motif. And for the sake of aesthetic continuity—and much to our delight—the full-coverage bodysuits the designer's become known for have seemingly managed to survive the end of the world.

Shiny puffer jackets, seamed leather coats, ponchos made of bedcovers, sculpted parkas, paneled dresses with trails of psychedelic pastel-hued scarves, tufts of faux fur and fluorescent yellow uniforms were among the highlights of the collection, all of which worked seamlessly together to fortify that remnants-of-humanity illusion. The underlying message that the designer wanted to communicate, however, was that of community—the forging of a peculiar new tribe of peoples and customs in the wake of cultural collapse. As models marched down the runway with the feline prowess of a warrior returning home post-victory, one thing became imminently clear: there is a Xena in all of us—and she never looked this good.

Total Recall

Born in the Moroccan town of Tétouan and educated in Paris, Khattabi’s upbringing required him to make sense of how the different influences surrounding him could align. In turn, his designs explore the embedded codes and history of his bicultural background. Total Recall addresses this phenomon by including garments meant to reflect adaptation and transformation. Skirts made of tire covers and motorcyle tarpaulins refashioned into dresses are scattered across the collection, conveying notions of displacement. Blending these elements adds an industrial touch to the pieces while still keeping a sense of movement.

From sweatpants infused with polka dots to nostaglic slogans and banner display, the ensembles symbolize hidden identities and memories. Giving us a glimpse into his own memories, Khattabi's work evokes affection for the past. It's a nod to the interconnectedness of culture and how we interact with its complexitites creatively.
