Reliving The Lost Tape with Balenciaga
The Lost Tape begins with a moody montage of backstage and arrival shots, accented with hairspray, cigarette smoke, and many familiar supermodel faces, all filmed on a handheld VHS recorder. Between the dirt runway the collection was presented on and the clothing itself, the word “archival” is the first that comes to mind, conjuring up memories of early Balenciaga shows done in dilapidated lots and Bryant Park. The conversation being had between the setting, pieces, and Korin’s direction leaves viewers with a celebration of the past and an excitement for the future.
While blackand neutral fabrisc were staples for the Fall 22 collection, Demna’s work never seems simple or basic. Reimagined for the modern-day, sharp lines and colossal shoulder pads took center stage on this runway. Vintage slip dresses are disassembled and put backward, sideways and upside down while jeans are transformed into a three-piece suit. Detachable selves can also double as a scarf, while DIY wrap closures allow for clothing to live on the body in many ways. This commitment to innovative use of fabric and styling also stands to highlight Balenciaga’a commitment to sustainability, represented in the Fall 22 collection with 89.6% certified sustainable fabrics and upcycled leather for garments and accessories.
