Sega Bodega Comes to God
Floating hypnotic choral harmonies over weaving break-beats and ethereal synths, “Only Seeing God When I Come” makes listeners divine in its likeness, before expelling them into original sin. The video opens on Bodega standing silhouetted and angelic under soft blue lighting, then cuts to a figure hunched in deference against a jagged black backdrop, interposed by the Salvador singer’s own drooling mouth, pressed against an unseen surface as if trapped in a purgatory-placenta. The figure in black is revealed, by a pale flashing light, to be joined by a woman, establishing the two as Adam and Eve. As the song progresses Bodega drips saccharine melodies over the two, tempting them into a tumble from grace, blurring the bodies of the figures with the curvature of his own snake-like sound. At the song’s climax, he takes a bite, expelling Adam and Eve, leaving larva, vegetation, and, ultimately, life, in their wake.
In the true spirit of The Tempter, Bodega leaves his listeners wet-mouthed and teary-eyed, kneeling at his alter. With a promise of more to come, he retreats to be swallowed (not spit) back into the abyss.
