Sized: A Site-Specific Exhibition
Vastness, tall ceilings, white walls, and a mezzanine level is the house of Alexander May's new project, OFFSITE.STUDIO. This endeavor is a culmination of May's life work as a creative director focusing on large-scale exhibitions and music festivals, among others. While this project was newly established in 2021, this exhibit presents itself as years in the making. Low-rise stages occupy the space, providing a theater-like presentation that blurs the line between the old and new worlds. From structural interior pieces to ornate objects, 17th-century rugs and Michèle Lamy's Gallic chair for Rick Owens furniture inhabit the same space. This intentional intertwining of design styles allows the viewer to explore endless possibilities. While this exhibition draws on the allure of a gallery atmosphere and the cultivation of refinement, ‘SIZED' is a new approach to traditional art fairs. Focusing on minimalism and intentionality, May has avoided the overwhelmingness of modern marketplaces. This meditation on the consumption of goods and the relationship between individuals and objects has made this exhibition one-of-a-kind.
Positioned in the middle of the floor plan stands a large one-of-one sculpture exclusively for ‘SIZED’ by Sterling Ruby for S.R. STUDIO. L.A. C.A. which is made up of polished aluminum fixtures and fabric that pulls on vibrancy and color. Vertically across from Sterling Ruby's eye-catching sculpture stands, NO SESSO's display of the "one titty dress." Metal chains hang between each dress, juxtaposing the delicateness of the garments and the heaviness of the presentation. Although the "one titty dress" is a magnificent sight to see, the large silk chiffon puffer steals the show. This puffer is designed with the intent of wearing over time if worn consistently or for special outings. Although the pieces appear to be avant-garde, they can be styled to accommodate for wearable looks— titty out or not. Located on the mezzanine level is TIWA Select's tea and mezcal bar that draws on the elements of nature designed by founder Alex Tieghi-Walker. A mix of designers helped construct this space contributing to the environment consisting of wood elements and textiles. Women-owned mezcal brand, YOLA Mezcal, teamed up with TIWA Select to display a collection of limited-edition mezcal copitas in addition to contributing to sipping events. 'SIZED' has brought together established and upcoming artists that value individuals' conscious relationship with home and life. Check this exhibition out in Los Angeles, California, starting Tuesday, June 15th, appointment only.
