Stone Island Digs Into Mineral Dyeing for AW ’026–’027

For its AW 26–27 collection, Stone Island continues its ongoing exploration of material and garment innovation, turning to the earth itself for inspiration. As part of the brand’s Community as a Form of Research project, photographer and Hugan Books founder Simjae wears the Q100045 Mineral Dyed Cotton Gabardine-TC, a hooded jacket that puts the collection’s focus on soil into practice.

Made from a fabric composed of 60% recycled cotton yarn and 40% conventional cotton, the jacket incorporates cotton scraps recovered from Stone Island’s production chain. The scraps are selected and reprocessed into new blended yarns containing at least 50% recovered material, creating a dense, heavy cotton gabardine that forms the basis of the piece.

The jacket is then garment dyed using inorganic pigments based on iron oxides derived from industrial processes. Blended together, the oxides create a palette of soft, natural tones, while the mineral dyeing process gives the fabric an uneven, chalky finish inspired by the appearance of a sandstorm. The treatment also enhances the garment’s vintage effect, adding another layer of texture to the densely woven fabric.

Details reference Stone Island’s own history, too. An elbow patch inspired by the brand’s early years is printed using the same dye recipe, connecting the experimental treatment back to its archive.

The mineral dyeing technique forms part of the collection’s wider exploration of soil, translating its natural tones and textures into a distinct garment treatment. It’s another example of Stone Island’s continued approach to experimentation, where fabric, color, and function come together to shape the final piece.

The film marks episode one of The Swap, which is an extension of the narrative world, Question Marc, that the brand has been building around their campaigns. The films bridge fashion, entertainment, and culture by casting real-life it-girls and fictionalizing the world of NYC and Marc Jacobs. Rowan refers to the project as one that is “character-driven,” built on the conjoining of the distinct personalities of both the brand and the talent the brand works with. Jemima Kirke refers to a bag as a place where space is held for the off chances. A woman carries in her bag the items she chooses to “just in case she falls into a hole, feels inspired or meets the love of her life. And for a New York woman, “just in case” is a regular occurrence,” says Kirke.
