WILLY CHAVARRIA’s Fall/Winter 2023 presentation was a masterclass in technical skill and emotive storytelling. Set against the moody backdrop of a Georgian revival mansion, the collection found its perfect home among the dark-paneled halls. Sonic muse Dorian Wood set the tone with a haunting rendition of “Piensa en Mi,” echoing the collection’s themes of resilience and a poignant call to protect future generations.

Titled KANGAROO, the collection marked Willy’s first foray into evening wear, weaving a narrative of protection in an unforgiving world. Through mostly all-black ensembles, punctuated by delicate notes of gardenia white in pussy bows, flowers, and flowing panels, Willy crafted a striking body of work that challenged Eurocentric ideals of beauty and elegance. Every detail — whether crinkled, billowed, or fluid — drew attention to the artistry of tailoring, fabric, and movement, made all the more powerful by its monochromatic palette.

At its heart, KANGAROO embraced a genderless ethos, offering a deeply personal meditation on what it means to exist in the world as brown, queer, Latino, and American.

From Catwalk to Print: Louis Vuitton Menswear

Founded by French craftsman and entrepreneur Louis Vuitton in 1854, the house quickly evolved from a maker of innovative steamer trunks into one of the world’s most influential and valuable fashion brands. During his tenure as creative director from 1997 to 2013, Marc Jacobs introduced the house’s first ready-to-wear collections, including menswear.

The twelfth installment in Yale University Press’s acclaimed Catwalk series, LOUIS VUITTON MENSWEAR offers an illustrated history of the house and the evolution of its menswear, with contributions from fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen.

A succession of creative directors, including Paul Helbers, Kim Jones, Virgil Abloh, and Pharrell Williams, have each helped shape the house’s menswear identity. The book traces the department’s history through profiles of its creative directors, followed by each menswear collection, accompanied by short essays exploring its influences and defining moments.

Filled with hundreds of runway images, the volume captures the clothes, shoes, accessories, and the models and celebrities who brought each collection to life. Finished with the cloth binding and ribbon details synonymous with the Catwalk series, it offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of Louis Vuitton menswear.
