Nautically-Inspired: Foo and Foo Fall/Winter 2023
After the show, office had a chance to catch up with Hilfiger to talk about her process when creating this collection, what's in store for the future of the brand, and whether she'd ever return to Nantucket.
You spent a lot of time in Nantucket, Massacheussetts where it's very preppy and nautical. Was there a particular moment that inspired this collection?
I tried to be a little less technical and literal and more of a vibe. I wanted it to be a feeling and a memory. I grew up hearing, "oh, this is so nautical." I went to Nantucket a lot and there was a lot of sailing. This collection is my vision of that and how I wish it could look and what it would be like if I went back with all of the preppy kids.
Would you go back to school?
Honestly, I'd rather die than go back. I'm just kidding. I would... why not? I have more buttons than them, I have more stuff to play with at the dinner table.
What's your takeaway from this collection?
Noticing the evolution and really trying to highlight the hero pieces.
There's a lot of buzz around sustainability, identity and inclusivity. How did you address these issues in a genuine way throughout this collection?
There's a lot of sustainability in this collection. I got deadstock peacoats. Also, when the models came in to get fitted, it was really great working with everyone to figure out the casting and making sure this is what it would look like they would actually wear. I kept asking, "Are you okay in this skirt?' and "are you okay in this tiny pink top?" I really wanted it to feel genuine and the real narrative of these kids.
How do you want people to feel when they wear the collection?
I want people to feel like they're not bored and that they can play with the clothes in subtle ways... I want it to feel like that perfect vintage hoodie that you found and it's exactly where and what you needed it to be.
What's your favorite piece or look this season?
My favorite piece is the titty tank. It makes your boobs look amazing. I love all of the skirts; I loved making them. It was also fun to do a spandex print because I've never done it before.
Would you consider this a gender neutral collection?
For sure. It's for everyone. I feel like everyone has such a unique identity and their own personality in the collection. I wanted to show that with the models.
