Susan & Myrtle

Spicer and Tanio create a great deal of work together, as they share a similar eye. As representation is so important to them, shooting some age-defying shots of strong women stomping through the city in Balenciaga seemed the logical next step for their work. The attention to Susan and Myrtle’s personalities IRL really comes through; the upclose image of Myrtle’s hands, seeing her smiling with her walker, Susan simply commanding traffic in a giant, shiny black puffer…

“Diversity is a huge buzzword in the industry… but inclusion is the most important factor. It’s also the most valuable thing you can do—to surround yourself with different types of people,” Spicer says. “This project specifically highlights that. Shooting people you wouldn’t expect to see on the cover of Vogue. I think that not only creates interesting images, I think it also sends a good message; I don’t wanna sound corny, but you know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
