Barragán SS21

“Humildad” screams Mexico and Chicano pride. The body inclusive and diverse models arrest your attention in structural, cropped blazers, campy and oversized square-toed shoes, and cut-out knit pieces hugging the bodies of their wearers. Motifs include geometric patterns that call upon ancient pyramids in Mexico, such as those at Teotihuacan, and large stars centered on some of the pants and t-shirts reference the American portion of Barragán’s identity. The star also represents the current broken state of the U.S., as the lone star has been taken apart from its flag.

Barragán’s play with silhouettes and geometry goes well with his vibrant color palette consisting of purples, reds, yellows, greens, and blues. He elevates Mexican culture, lovingly references its imagery, and celebrates individuality and the body with sexy shapes and structures. He synthesizes both sides of his identity to create this playful and risk-taking collection that serves as a “glowing light at the end of the tunnel," igniting some hope and joy in its viewers for the new year.
