Becoming a Human Rorschach Test

Campbell wants to make it known that the "artwork" adapted for this collection isn't inherently art at the core. Instead of models, Campbell originally used mannequins to represent the inkblot tests. The psychology of the human psyche and perception is shown through conspicuous symmetry silhouettes and embellishments within each garment.

Tell me about the creative process behind C5: Rorschach collection.

C5: Rorschach is the first part of a year-long project I am zoning in on. Every aspect of the mini capsule collection was conceptualized and executed in-house. Out of the 15 looks I originally sketched out, we were able to execute nine. Draping, pattern-making, sewing, all of this was done in-house. The creative process was a lot of fun with the idea in mind that I get to expand on this one theme throughout the year.

Describe some of the pieces and which ones are your favorite.

In the capsule, I utilized a lot of curved seams and featured a few eye-catching mini skirts. My favorite piece would have to be the curved hem tank top featuring our alien woman print with pierced shoulders on the front and our money woman print on the back.

As a Black woman designer, why are the Rorschach inkblots significant to you?

As Black women, we are constantly surveilled and watched under a microscope. The significance of the Rorschach theme lies in the question of: 'As a Black woman how do I allow the social stigma I face to impact how I present myself to the world?'

You say the idea is to unpack what it feels like to be a human Rorschach test and different perceptions. Would you say this personally relates to you? If so, why?

Yes, most definitely. I’ve spent a lot of time rejecting what people and society may want to see from me or want me to be not only as a designer but as a Black woman. My approach to my work is the same approach I take in my day-to-day life which is to unapologetically accept who I am and what I bring to the table.

How is this collection different from your previous ones?

Most notably from my last collection, C5: Rorschach takes on a more muted color palette and has significantly less of the custom original prints I specialize in.

How will C5: Rorschach determine your evolution and versatility for future collections?

C5: Rorschach gave a small sneak peek into the evolution of the prints I will be presenting. My original prints consist of mostly abstract pieces of art but now I will be incorporating other mediums such as photography.

What do you want viewers and wearers to get out of this colelction?

For people that decide to interact with the collection in any shape or form, I want them to understand the idea of patience and slowing down when it comes to creativity. It’s a beautiful thing to take your time with a collection or an idea and draw it out for as long as you would like.

How do you want people to feel in the collection?

I want people to feel strong and confident in the collection, even a bit extraterrestrial.
