FOOANDFOO Fall/Winter 2018

It's barely the 2000's, and we’re in high school again. And for many, although may not be their fondest memory, going back with FOOANDFOO is much more fun. At FOO School, we leaned a few important lessons, FOOANDFOO's Creative Director and Founder, Elizabeth Hilfiger. Instead of uniforms and textbooks, it's ideal to come to class decked out with denim, chucks— and for accessories, go with gummy bears and GameBoys.

Hilfiger chatted with us, while the class of couture bad kids— fittingly cast by Midland— threw paper planes, and stared at their screens, sipping beer, with Prinicpal Daniela Lalita laying down the law over the loudspeaker, while on the sidelines, a stylish crowd watched from their seats on the bleechers. Since the start, the brand's focus has been on FOOANDFOO being for "FOO and You." And at her first show for NYFW, Hilfiger had friendship front and center.

School may not have been the best for us all. But whether you were the first to raise their hand in history, or the deviant dedicated to detention, there was enlightenment for everyone to be found in Elizabeth's FW18 collection. She'd never been a big fan of 8AM classes and algebra, but the designer's dislike for math made for a finessed, and stylish synesthesia— especially noticeable on the designs she'd woven with deconstruced cosine waves, and the shirts printed with patterns of scattered, stylized numerical symbols. It was playful, fun, and still as chic and edgy as ever. Certainly, this is a collection fit for the cool kids.

Total Recall

Born in the Moroccan town of Tétouan and educated in Paris, Khattabi’s upbringing required him to make sense of how the different influences surrounding him could align. In turn, his designs explore the embedded codes and history of his bicultural background. Total Recall addresses this phenomon by including garments meant to reflect adaptation and transformation. Skirts made of tire covers and motorcyle tarpaulins refashioned into dresses are scattered across the collection, conveying notions of displacement. Blending these elements adds an industrial touch to the pieces while still keeping a sense of movement.

From sweatpants infused with polka dots to nostaglic slogans and banner display, the ensembles symbolize hidden identities and memories. Giving us a glimpse into his own memories, Khattabi's work evokes affection for the past. It's a nod to the interconnectedness of culture and how we interact with its complexitites creatively.
