I Think I'm Paranoid

A-COLD-WALL* designer Samuel Ross transported his audience into the psyche of a highly imaginative but slightly anxious, creative person with his A/W '19 presentation this LFWM. The setting was a surrealist blend of Gordon Parks’ untitled 1956 image of two girls in Alabama wading in ankle-deep water and Jeff Wall’s A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) from 1993.

Models with wind-blown hair looked nervously over their shoulders while walking a runway flanked by reflecting pools filled with slowly writhing figures reminiscent of busy, paranoid thoughts moving through the mind. Two-thirds of the way through the show, a dog appeared on a long chain and barked loudly at it’s nearby reflection, adding to the show’s overall feeling of discomfort, while still thoroughly engaging.

Our favorite looks included a black raincoat paired with quilted shorts and a sweater with cutout detailing, and a collared white button up paired with grid-patterned pants and an oversized scarf draped over the model's arm. The brand also presented accessories—handbag and carryall pieces with geometric designs stood out as some of the most covetable looks.

This season, Ross’ vision, though at times unsettling, was a welcome sign of how allowing one's inner struggle—or societal challenges, in general—can constructively inform their sartorial decisions.

Escaping the Glass Cage
