NAACP Creative Sole Scholarship

Legendary sneaker brand, Vans, has partnered with the NAACP; the United States’ leading civil rights organization, to establish the ‘NAACP Creative Sole Scholarship Powered by Vans.’ Vans has committed to uplifting and supporting African American students within all communities by providing them with financial aid to be put towards their college educations. This scholarship applies to students studying and pursuing a career within a variety of different curriculums including music, design, architecture, communications, journalism, marketing, and art.

Applications are open for the NAACP Creative Sole Scholarship Powered by Vans from now until June 18, 2021. On August 9, the N-SPIRE, a committee centered around creating and providing scholarships within the NAACP, will announce the 50 students chosen to be the recipients of the scholarship. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to be put towards tuition fees and to continue their support of these students, Vans will provide them with $5,000 a each year for up to four years.

Roger (the Gig Slut) Mairlot's Still Going

When was the last time you had your face painted? Maybe it was at a childhood birthday party or a local fair, where your chosen mask sparked a day of pretend play. Revisiting this childhood ritual, artists Angel Velluto and Janina Zais took us across London to meet eight seniors whose stories revealed resilience and strength. Each participant was asked to fill out a Proustian-inspired questionnaire, and their responses were discussed with the team before being translated into unique masks by Zais. During the process, we had the chance to chat with each person to learn more about why the face paint they chose felt like a fitting tribute to their lives.

Meet Roger Mairlot, better known as 'The Gig Slut'. Though he's always felt at home in both iconic and underground venues, since retiring in 2008, Roger has fully immersed himself in London’s live music scene. Roger's passion has evolved into a full-blown obsession in recent years. Aiming to attend a gig every night — at the very least — he admits that in the past year, he hasn’t attended as many as he would have liked. Still, he continues to handwrite his schedule each week, pursuing his passion with military precision and tenacity.
