Traveling Through Space and Time with Kevin Holliday

The track accompanies an animated visualizer by Hex with one of the many different sides of Kevin appearing in one of the many realities possible through his music.

We spoke with Kevin about where he’s at these days, still repping Brooklyn, and where he wants to go next in 2021.

What’s good bro, how are you living these days?

Good man just trying to focus on music. I’ve been keeping my head down for the most part. I’ve been trying to develop my skills in other mediums as well given the state of things in New York lately. Been doing a lot of graphic design recently.

What’s been on your mind?

Honestly… money [laughs]. I need more of it to do the things I want. I’m trying to not make that a focus but it is part of the creative process I guess. You have to have money to invest in your craft. I’m working on creating new streams of revenue in addition to doubling down on creating great music that draws people into my world.

What’s been bringing you joy during Brooklyn Covid winter?

I like going on really long walks. Being inside so often has kinda made me dread the indoors. Working on my project also brings me joy but being realistic about the state of the pandemic, sometimes it’s difficult to find happiness.

Tell me something you’ve read or watched or listened to recently that you think everyone should check out?

So I’m a pretty big anime fan and I’ve been going back and watching things from my childhood. Recently I started rewatching Dragon Ball and it's pretty fire. In the original Dragon Ball, Goku is pretty dumb but also really smart. I've been watching like 10 episodes a day. At this point, if I’m not making music I’m doing that [laughs]. But for real a lot of my stuff is inspired by anime especially Hayao Miyazaki. My last EP, Space Cadet, was pretty inspired by that aesthetic so I’m excited to be able to just relax at home and consume more media that fuels my own creative spirit.

How are you feeling about your creative rhythm?

Creatively I’m really streaky. Sometimes I can make 3 or 4 solid songs in one day, but other times I get into huge ruts that I can't get out of for weeks. It all really depends. I think that's how it goes as a creative. You have to roll with the punches and never get too high or too low. That's kinda what this panda bear has taught me. You have to put everything in perspective and don’t forget to not take yourself too seriously.

What have you been cooking up?

I’ve been working on the project for what feels like my whole life [laughs]. I have songs on it that I’ve been working on for over 2 years. I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from my friends and fans that they want more from me in 2021 so I’m releasing a shorter project in the first half of the year then a longer one later, but definitely a lot of music, art, merch, new creative endeavors I’m excited about coming up soon.

Tell me about the music video you’re releasing?

I chose to put out my new single, “Tried My Best,” with a visual because I feel so confident in the sonics I’m working on, so I really wanted to add more fuel to the fire. It’s less of a full music video and more of a visualizer to accompany the song, that fits the vibe. Something stank but beautiful. I knew that I wanted to do something with 3D animation. A close friend of mine put me on to this dope animator named Hex and I hit them up on Instagram and we went from there. As soon as they showed me the original drafts I knew it was going to be exactly what I wanted.

What’s it getting to mix the music with another expansive art form?

I truly believe that all art mediums are connected in a way. You can feed off of any other type of artist and get a different perspective if you let yourself think that way. I’m a huge Bruce Lee fan as I mentioned in our last conversation, and a lot of the times that I feel like studying his movements as a martial artist gives me inspiration in music. I think me and Hex just cycled off of each other in a similar way to make something that made sense as a complete package. I want my fans to be able to put this visual on the TV in their living room when they’re doing their latest craft, recipe, workout, some quarantine activity you fuck with, and DM it to their friends on IG and TikTok and just enjoy some shit like I’ve been trying so hard to do.

What are you hoping to happen for your music in the next few months?

In the next few months, people can expect a few more singles leading up to the first new project of the year. It’s also been pretty difficult to navigate especially with COVID, but I’ve been talking to a handful of young, talented videographers that I’m excited to collaborate with.

What’s your dream first post-COVID show, all power to you?

I always grew up going to Afropunk every summer because I literally live a few blocks away in Brooklyn. Seeing so many amazing Black performers all on the same stage at once was the highlight of the year for me every year. Representation is so important. I’m not totally sure I would be doing what I’m doing right now if it weren't for Afropunk. Since I was a teenager I’ve wondered about how it would feel to be on that stage. I think that's the goal, being able to perform in Black-centric spaces, as soon as I could be granted the opportunity safely.
