How has your approach to balancing music and acting evolved as your music career has grown?
It’s gotten a lot harder to balance, but I spend most of my time on set and acting, so in my free time from film, or even if it’s on set in my chair, I try to write or play guitar. I write a lot in journals, or in my notes app, when I get random lyric ideas or thoughts, for the next time I’m in the studio. On weekends, I’ll try to shoot music videos or find time to go to the studio; there aren’t enough hours in the day, haha.
Is music an expansion of your acting artistry or is it a separate entity?
I’d say it’s a separate entity. Music is a lot more personal, whereas when I’m acting I’m telling other people's stories. It can be an expansion when I’m “acting” in music videos or if I’m writing music based on a character or film I’ve done, but mostly I’d say music is much more personal.
What makes this new musical era feel distinct from your previous releases?
This most recent release, Ugly and Rotten, is definitely the heaviest song I’ve released, which is so fun to me. I love metal and rock and wish I could do more in that world, so I was so excited to put Ugly and Rotten out there and see how people felt about it!
You’ve said your music is influenced by both Britney Spears and Heavy Metal. What specifically inspires you about these?
Haha I feel like I try to draw my confidence from Britney. Growing up I lived about 2 hours outside of LA, but I had to drive in for work almost every day. I only had Britney Spears' Greatest Hits CD with all her videos on it and watched that almost every day in the car for something like 5 years. So I definitely look to her when I feel awkward or don’t have confidence in a music video or something because she’s SO captivating to watch. Then, metal/heavy metal is my favorite genre of music! It’s what I grew up on as well with my dad, so it influences a lot of the guitars, tones, and sounds I use in my music! A lot of my references are Flyleaf, Evanescence, Deftones, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, etc!
