Into the Elusive World of No Sesso

For designers, New York Fashion Week is an opportunity to share their most captivating ideas, live testing them on the runway. Yet many of them face a particular challenge: how can they continue to push their brands in innovative ways while avoiding the common pitfalls of derivative trends? No Sesso takes this issue head-on and triumphs in the most fantastic of ways. The label, helmed by co-creative directors Pia Davis and Autumn Randolph, continues to push the bounds of its creativity with each collection it presents. For their Spring/Summer 2023 collection, presented at The Shed at Hudson Yards, Davis and Randolph took a step away from the maximalism they have become known for in past seasons and leaned into the enigmatic and subversive.

Models emerged from the darkness into the iridescent spotlights of the runway, donning looks that ranged from abstract asymmetrical sportswear to a set crafted entirely of metal pearls. The designs are a testament to Davis and Randolph’s uncompromising ability to reconcile utility and sensuality in their work. It is little surprise that the collection takes the name “Sesso,” from the label’s own name (No Sesso translates to “No Sex” in Italian). Sex is undoubtedly present on the runway, but in a way that draws attention to itself in the very manner it is most mysterious.

office caught an elusive glimpse backstage before the start of the show. The scene revealed the tireless hours that went into the meticulous planning of the presentation’s every detail. From the flawless makeup direction by Sinn City of the Angelito Collective, to the striking hair pieces and exaggerated nail designs, no element was ignored in the preparations. As first looks began to come together, some of the cast and crew shared a heartfelt moment with Davis as they posed for a shot and basked in the wonder of what they had all worked to create together. In only a few moments, all their endeavors would come to fruition on the runway.

Escaping the Glass Cage
