Mallrat Knows She's Divalicious

What’s the most sacred thing you do before a show?

My makeup.

Love that. What’s the first thing you want after getting off stage?

A cup of tea.

Okay. What tea do you drink?

I do a black tea with honey and oat milk or soy milk.

With a name like Mallrat, I have to ask, what was your favorite place in the mall? Were you a Hot Topic girl? A Claire’s girl?

I like to go to the Apple store and play Plants vs Zombies on the iPad.

That’s such a unique answer. Okay, so there’s a lot of world-building on your latest album. What made you want to put magical realism and images of suburbia together?

I wanted to try and bring my imaginary world to life. So it was all inspired by the characters and the magic that I imagined when I would be at home in Brisbane as a kid.

What do you and the other performers tonight have in common?

We're all divalicious.

Love that. What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you on tour so far?

On this tour, I’ve started wearing this hat all the time, and I feel like it’s unlocked my true self.

I was looking at that!

I’m obsessed with it. And I started wearing ears. I clipped ears onto my headphones on stage. It’s not something weird that’s happened, but it’s like, I just did not expect it to transform my identity. That’s it. Makes me wonder if I’m a furry or something

That’d be sick. Wait, okay— what animal do you think it is? What do you imagine?

I think a cat.

It’s a cat?

Yeah.

Okay, vibe. Is there anything else weird that’s happened on a different tour?

For sure. When I was in Nashville on the MARINA tour last year, I was crossing the street, and nobody was really around. But then at the pedestrian crossing, Yung Lean and I were across the street from each other, and he’s my favorite artist. I was like, that guy looks like Yung Lean! And then we had a really nice conversation, and I felt like someone had sprinkled fairy dust on me. Very serendipitous.

What are you listening to lately?

A lot of nostalgic, dopamine-hit music. Like Avicii and this rap mixtape from Australia, but also Helena Gao’s “Lao Shi,” and this girl from Melbourne called Hannah Brewer. Her song is called “Small Town Rockstar.” Those are in high rotation right now.

What keeps you sane while touring?

My noise-cancelling headphones.

What song is your favorite to perform?

“Hocus Pocus.” I really like the little dance breaks in it.

What are your thoughts on club music right now?

Ooh, I guess I don’t really know what club music is. I love dance music, which is a very broad term.

What do you think they should play at the club?

Well, when I DJ, I like to play Ninajirachi, M.I.A., A.G. Cook remixes, and Avicii.

You’ve been dabbling across genres. How has that exploration been going? And where do you think it's going to end up sound-wise?

I don’t think there’s an end point. I think it’s just a constant. I just like so many different things and it would feel weirdly fake to just do one thing. There’s not as much thought that goes into it as maybe it seems; I just like so many different things.

What does the act of creating music do for you as a person?

It makes me feel like I have a purpose.
