Not Your Average Temporary Tattoo: Ephemeral Tattoo
Ephemeral uses a compound in the ink that your body can break down which causes your tattoo fades completely within 9-15 months, and then it’s gone right before your eyes. Usually being booked out months in advance, Ephemeral Tattoos is your next go-to shop to get a tattoo if you’re one of the lucky ones who can snag an appointment. Unlike most shops, once that appointment is secured, you are prompted with a questionnaire to better prepare your artist for what you were thinking of getting as a tattoo. Once you step foot into their Brooklyn-based shop, you are instantly greeted with a warm hello, and a tattoo artist sits with you to confirm placement, and size. For people who are unsure of the commitment to permanent tattooing, Ephemeral is the perfect place for you to get some new ink.
office had the opportunity to check out the shop, ask some questions, and even get a tattoo themself to get the full Ephemeral experience.

How is an Ephemeral tattoo different from a permanent ink tattoo? How does it disappear after a year?
To understand how Ephemeral ink works, it’s helpful to understand why permanent tattoos are permanent. A permanent tattoo uses ink that goes into the dermis—the layer just below the outer skin— administered via needle. The thing that makes permanent tattoos permanent is your body’s inability to break down the dye. Traditional tattoo ink clumps together; too large to be removed, your body “walls off” the area, and the ink stays for life.
In contrast, Ephemeral’s tattoo ink particles break down over time and become small enough to be removed by the body. Ephemeral tattoos fade naturally over 9-15 months, but the exact amount of time varies by person depending on their unique skin type and the placement of the tattoo.
Why did you decide to start Ephemeral Tattoo?
Ephemeral’s founding team is made up of several individuals who grew up in households where tattoos were taboo; so this company extends from a real desire to bridge the gap between conventional ink and temporary tattoos, making the artistry more accessible.
The idea for Ephemeral was sparked when one team member had to go through the painful ordeal of getting his permanent tattoos removed. This sparked an epiphany: What if tattoo ink was made to fade? The full tattoo experience, minus the permanence?
Ephemeral was an opportunity to address this question and redirect the future of the tattoo industry by creating a new category of tattoos and making the tattoo world more inclusive and approachable to everyone—including those who were previously turned off by the idea of a lifetime commitment. The entire Ephemeral experience is centered around giving an authentic tattoo experience without any of the intimidation or pressure.
What can people expect after getting a tattoo?
Immediately after getting an Ephemeral tattoo, all clients are given an aftercare kit and are walked through the process of caring for their skin as it heals by an Ephemeral team member. The healing process takes approximately 4-6 weeks, and during this time clients may experience itchiness or dry skin on or around the site of their tattoo. As the healing process comes to a close, the tattoo will be at its most vibrant.
Are more locations opening up soon?
Ephemeral’s second-ever studio is set to open this fall in Los Angeles, California, and we’re excited to announce other locations we have in the works soon!
