Pyer Moss Couture 1
Kerby Jean-Raymond is the first Black designer to present a show on the couture calendar in over 150 years. While the pressure may have been on, only grace was shown from the designer’s hard work of months of preparation. We see pieces on models like a jar of peanut butter with the Pyer Moss logo casually splayed across, or a model in a silk robe with a long veil of rollers cascading down to her whole body. These looks are to tell a story of blackness that hasn’t been told before. It shows that Black excellence shines through the ordinary and mundane. Each couture piece paid homage to Black inventions through fashion like never seen before.
The Haitian-American designer shares show notes, “We are an invention inside of an invention. Inside of the creation of race, we made blackness.”
