Spring Break 4ever Bi********
What about NYC summer inspired you in the making of the editorial?
I went to Coney Island last summer with my sister and we had such an amazing time. She came to visit me and we just had the best day. It was her first time in New York and I wanted to capture the magic of summer in NYC, that feeling of excitement and energy. Everything we did on that day, we did on the shoot. There's just something about Coney Island.
I’m originally from London so Coney Island is so exciting to me- I love the colours, surrounding metal infrastructure, old rides, the food. I’ve always loved how accessible the beach is to the city. London doesn’t have one, there’s just something about it. I’m obsessed with the beach here. There was so much energy and everyone was bouncing off each other and that's what I wanted to capture with the images…that essence of New York summer.
I know it was also inspired by Spring Breakers, is there a part of the film that you feel like you've related to a lot? What about the film made you want to do something?
Spring Breakers is such an iconic movie. It's shot on film, the casting is perfect. Its Disney stars turned delinquents and the score was co-composed by Skrillex. We were inspired by David LaChapelle and wanted the colours of Coney Island to come out in the shoot. I wanted to capture the feeling of never wanting summer to end.
Originally, it started as a merch shoot. The brand t-shirts are made in a way so that when tied into a balaclava the grill on the shirt is over your mouth. I really wanted to shoot it on women and I just thought it would be really badass to have a bunch of hot girls in balaclavas.
How did working with Kate and Joel influence the images?
I love collaborating with friends so I wanted to include as many people as possible. Kate had shown me these bikinis they made and I loved them so much I had to ask her if they would like to be involved and she was down! Each bikini is custom to the models measurements and include bespoke glass components hand-blown in NYC. I was on the hunt for bikinis and thinking about styling- this was important and we chose colors inspired by Spring Breakers. The custom bikinis are such an important part of elevating the shoot and I’m so grateful for Kate and Joel.
In terms of your craft in general, what's the most inspiring to you right now?
My main inspiration has always been nature (trees and plants). The design that got my grillz noticed when I first started was this design that I did which was based on thorns. The area that I lived in in London, there was a lot of greenery and different types of plants, especially flowers. So for me, my biggest inspiration has always been trees, flora or plants. I'm constantly taking pictures of different plants that I come across.
Is there anyone who you're kind of dying to see in grillz?
`
She has them already, but Doechii please give me a chance. She is so inspirational and her work and styling is really on point. I know we could make some really interesting art together. I love what she’s been doing. Grilz have become a lot more popular recently. So...maybe also my mom (laughs).
If you had to come up with 2 words to kind of describe your style as of right now like what would they be?
I feel like, style-wise, I'm not really sure. I've taken kind of a break over the summer and this shoot definitely helped me figure out what direction I want to go in. Grillz-wise, it's kind of all over the place. I don't really have a specific style but I know what I want to do for my next shoot. It's going to be more gothic. I just want to try out different styles.
What’s pushing you to want to explore different creative ventures?
I’ve been specializing in grillz for 5 years now and although I love making them I’m ready to try new things and use the knowledge I’ve learnt over the past 5 years to build myself up as an artist and put different creative skills into practice. I've made over 700 grillz myself by hand so I think I'm just kind of getting to a point where although I do love making them I'm burning out a little.
I've always been into storytelling and I went to Central St. Martins as well which was heavy in conceptual jewelry and so I have a background in art and sculpture. Now I'm trying to get out there a bit more and work with my friends to use grillz. I want to explore images, storytelling, and narrative-based shoots and miss the feeling of being around other people and inspired by them.
I'm kind of tired of being self-reliant. I haven't really had a mentor so being able to collaborate is really important to me because it helps me put things into perspective and be inspired by the people around me. I feel like I'm going through an ego death at the moment. I think it's the age of Aquarius. I'm booked in with the psychics (laughs)…I'm gonna figure that out.
Do you feel like there is anything lacking in the grillz universe?
I actually don't think there is anything missing. There's so many different makers and styles at the moment and a lot of people pushing boundaries. Specifically with CAD (computer aided design). I think it's at its best, people's skills are the highest they’ve ever been, and they are able to achieve a lot more.
