Trumpland

Coming from New York City, the inauguration was the first time I'd ever seen the faces of Trump supporters en masse—aside from peering at drivers on the highway with Trump-stickered cars over the last few months. In shooting these portraits, subjects were generally kind and enthusiastic, but the mood in the area felt tense and many I approached were suspicious.

There was generally peaceful confrontation between supporters and demonstrators. Both sides were chanting "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE"—and they were right.

New York protests Trump's Muslim Ban

January 30, 2017

Yesterday, January 29th, a reported 10,000 New Yorkers came together to protest Donald Trump's executive order banning refugees and immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries. The march followed the weekend's airport protests from all over the country, including a massive one at JFK.

Senators Schumer and Gillibrand were present in Battery Park for a rally within view of the Statue of Liberty, and then thousands marched to voice their opposition to the (frankly, unconsitutional) ban. Scroll through below for photos of the day.

The Women's March on Washington was full of grace, optimism, and solidarity. Yes, marchers are angry and grief-stricken at the state of American politics, but they also came armed with kindness and good humor, and the thousands of signs (now being catalogued for museums!) reflected those sentiments. Here are just a few of the many incredible posters that gave us hope for the future.

January 22, 2017

The Women's March in New York was one of the biggest in the largest national protest movement in history. An estimated 400,000 people showed up in support of women's rights, in a warm, cathartic and totally necessary response to the presidential election. New York residents were obviously pretty unanimously opposed to Donald Trump from the jump, but it was still heartening to see such a united opposition. New Yorkers came together for women, and it was really something to see.
