Last night in Paris, Raf Simons presented his A/W ’19 collection. It was, as Raf usually is, dramatic, but also wearable; dark, but elegant.

While the last few seasons have seen the designer channeling underground pop culture moments like Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures imagery last spring, and for F/W ‘18, Glenn O’Brien and Cookie Mueller’s Drugs, this collection strayed from the more obvious nods to subculture. Though, of course it was still there, with references from David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart.

The pieces also felt Lynchian in their construction, with exaggerated shoulders and asymmetrical lengths paired with baggy painter pants and delicate leopard printed gloves. All the looks were finished off with hats, or rather, helmets—think equestrian meets Full Metal Jacket.

At the presentation itself, Belgian post-punk band Whispering Songs play a few songs after Joy Division’s "Atmosphere" filled up the room. After a brief intermission, the second half of the showcase began. As his first collection since announcing his leave from Calvin Klein, Simons A/W ‘19 was a statement—a statement that wherever he goes, Raf can’t help but leave his Midas touch, and when it’s under his own name, the results are almost perfect.
