The Civil Dead Is To Die For

Distributed by Utopia (Shiva Baby; El Planeta; We’re All Going To The World’s Fair), the film follows a young guy (Tatum) who has every intention of just hanging out while his more motivated wife (Whitney Weir) is out of town, but then Clay runs into an old acquaintance, Whit (Thomas). “Friends” from high school, the two reminisce and catch up; Clay’s been getting back into photography work, while Whit’s been trying to figure out why Clay’s the first person in weeks who’s been able to see him. A collection of seemingly aimless bits met with a warm and simple stillness, Tatum, who also directed the film, sets a breathable pace to really soak up all of the sad, purgatory energy. And Thomas’s portrayal of a dead actor is just about as heartbreaking as it is hilarious. After all, what’s funnier than your own little personal, mildly-annoying haunting?
