Fear of God’s Heavenly Runway Debut

At the show, a circular green screen projected “clouds” overhead and models emerged silhouetted from a lighted doorway as if stepping out from heaven’s gates. Each of the collection’s 58 looks embraced Fear of God’s signature color palette, from black and neutrals to shades of yellow and green. Spanning tailored overcoats that taper past the shoulders and loose-fitting trousers, the show funneled the spirit of suit-and-tie tradition into wearable garments that are just as layerable as cozy, wool or cashmere blankets.

For Lorenzo, the night was especially meaningful because it told the story of his journey as a designer. Backstage, he reflected on when his father would “tell [him] stories about his grandmother picking cotton” and how today, he leafs through fabric swatches to choose the right material for his newest designs. With its nods to Christianity and Black creativity, the collection is therefore not a retelling of Fear of God’s story, but just the introduction.
