ItsMaysMemes Is BIG in Fashion

The silent brilliance echoing beneath the peculiarity of Itsmaysmemes posts stem from the fact that it’s so clever and humorous at the same time. She has altered the way in which people look at clothing by offering us an alternative way of thinking.

How would you introduce yourself to someone who isn’t yet familiar with ‘itsMaysMemes’ ?

That’s actually something I do find hard to explain to people about my account. When I initially started the account when I was 16 I didn’t exactly intend for it to get much traction outside of my friends. I have a fashion meme account where I create the content. Which is kind of rare because, I’m editing the images myself rather than re-posting other people’s work.

When did you first find yourself gravitating towards the world of fashion and what sparked the creation of this iconic account?

You’re so kind. Thanks for the love I appreciate it. I was raised around a very creative household where art and fashion go hand in hand. My mom owned a streetwear boutique and my dad was a graffiti artist. The day after I was born I would go to work with my mom until I was old enough to go to school. Then I was only there after school and weekends. I spent many many days playing amongst clothing and window displays.

When you caught the eye of the public what was that like for you? Which edits have garnered the most traction?

When I started the account I honestly didn’t expect or go into it with the intention of going anywhere. I created it as something for me to do because I was bored and to share with friends. I’m a self-taught editor and I really enjoy the challenge of perfecting an image so that the viewer may not even know that I had exaggerated the photo in anyway. When those follows started rolling in I was shocked. It was honestly super funny. I was excited that my work was being seen worldwide and outside my circle of friends. It’s been mind blowing really. I was just a 16 year old girl and to have that attention drawn to something I was just doing for fun was crazy. I’m so grateful of all the opportunities and connections that have come my way through, ItsMaysMemes. People really seem to love the exaggerated jackets. Those ones really do well and jackets I edited 3 years ago still being re-posted which is pretty cool.

How do you conceptualize your vision when you edit the pieces of clothing on your subjects? Could you walk us through the creation of one of your edits?

As I scroll through photo’s something will catch my eye and I’ll just know that I want to work my magic on it when I see it. It’s more of a feeling and I’ll just get super inspired. I obviously have to take a lot of things into consideration to make my vision come to life. I guess I kind of have muses. I gravitate towards certain designers and a few people that are very influential in my work.

Who are some of your current favorite designers and have you ever considered collaborating with them on any future collections?

I really love Demna Gvasalia & Alessandro Michele and what they are doing with The Hacking Project. I also love Rick Owens & Michèle Lamy. It would be such a dream to collaborate with any of them if their team ever reached out.

Do your edits reflect how you personally dress outside of social media? What’s the key to a fire fit?

Well, I live on Oahu and unfortunately I never get an opportunity to wear jackets here really because it’s consistently hot with the odd hurricane/torrential rain storm season. I definitely try my best to express myself through fashion. I think the key to a fire fit is to be authentic to yourself and wear what you want.

Would you ever consider starting your own clothing line? If yes, would they be oversized garments or would you stray away from your edits and introduce a new vision to your followers?

I don’t think I would start my own clothing line. I would however love to collaborate with other designers in someway. I think it would be cool to make giant clothing and accessories. The idea of seeing the whole process come to life would be amazing.

Would you ever branch outside of fashion and explore other ways to morphe or edit other types of objects in photos?

Yes! I haven’t given that much thought but that would be super fun. I love what I do and I’m definitely open to exploring other ways to express myself through my work.

What fashion trends are you the most excited about right now?

Trends come and go and I tend not to keep up with them.

What do you have planned for ‘ItsMaysMemes’ for the rest of 2021?

My favorite season is obviously Fall/Winter, so I’m looking forward to when the colder season hits because I do love editing jackets. It’s a bit harder for me to edit in these summer months. Last year because of COVID fashion shows weren’t really happening and people weren’t out as much so it was hard to get captures of what was going on in the streets. Hoping things are getting a bit more normal this next season so I can get back into steady editing. I would also love to collaborate with more people!
