Look TOWARDS THE SUN with August 08

Immerse yourself in August 08’s outlook on his journey as a songwriter, solid artist, and new project for the summer. office had a chance to catch up with him below!

How would you describe your music?

I would describe it as a direct connection to my emotions.

I think my favorite track lyrically is 500 Days off your new project.  When songwriting what are some things that you are thinking about and how did you get into songwriting?

I think of telling a story, and coming from my direct emotions. I want to tell the truth without giving up too much.

Tell me about Towards The Sun.

Towards the Sun is the starting point of diving into those emotions. Just like a diver on a diving board before you jump into the water you jump towards the sun.

How has that shift from being a songwriter for other artists to now being a solo artist?

Honestly, songwriting was a blessing because it afforded me opportunities. But it left me empty without much to look forward to. So even though songwriting is a part of my journey it’s not who I am anymore. I’ve evolved and I think my music demonstrates that.

On 500 Days you mention that you’re a Capricorn, do you keep up with astrology?

I absolutely keep up with astrology even though I’m a Christian and it goes against my religion. But I don’t believe God gives us tools we aren’t supposed to use, we just have to learn how to use them appropriately.

How was working with Schoolboy Q? Did you get to see him record his verse?

Working with Q was great! I did got to see him record parts of his verse. We even spent a little bit of time working on his album. Shout out to Keem for setting up that connection!

What’s your favorite collaboration you’ve done so far?

Working on the video Good Girls Featuring Duckwrth.

How did you get into drumming and how did you get from there into producing?

I got into drumming through my mom. She would see me drumming on stuff so she had my aunt Joyce and my grandma get me a drum machine. When I was 13, I moved in with my uncle Thelsey’s and I started producing with my cousins.

What’s your favorite track on this project?

Towards the Sun.

What’s something that you would tell your younger self?

I would tell my younger self it would be so much easier to just listen than to jump off a cliff to understand.
