Backstage at Kenzo Spring/Summer 2018

In talks with Mike about the project, he recounted the impact of his first trip to LA and how it ignited his passion for the West Coast. Driving down the Sunset Strip and experiencing the historic rock bars that were once home to icons like Slash (and Mötley Crüe!), Mike was struck by the rich musical history that still resonates and inspires his own graphic designs today. George shared a similar sentiment. Although rock music and the culture of the West Coast was always central to them while growing up in Manchester, England, actually being in Los Angeles, where so many of these bands started their careers was a uniquely gratifying experience.

As a nod to the band's origins on the Strip, it was only fitting to debut the collection where it all began. Back in the day, the Viper Room was the place to be (and the place to get thrown out of), which is exactly why Represent showcased their 11-piece collection in the legendary venue. Of course, the brand is no stranger to collaborating with other rockers — having already worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, Megadeth, and Liam Gallagher — but this project with Mötley Crüe was particularly special.

The garments themselves may as well have come directly out of the late ‘80s. Cracked graphics and fading washes, perfectly grungey distressed hems and necklines – the pieces feel as if they’d been stored in an old rocker’s attic, faded in the West Coast sun, covered in years of cigarette smoke. The meticulous attention to detail in each piece has resulted in a collection that would inspire and seduce any LA vintage enthusiast. 

When discussing the collab with George at the Pop-up it was clear that quality and attention to detail is a non-negotiable for the creative duo. George also stressed the importance of physical activations and being able to show Represent’s audience exactly what they’re about. 

The graphics take iconic Mötley Crüe album artwork, namely from 1989’s Dr. Feelgood & 1987’s Girls, Girls, Girls, and blend them with the unmistakable Represent aesthetic. It’s a contemporary take on beloved classics, paying homage to the band’s past whilst firmly cementing its position in the history of both Represent and Mötley Crüe. Mike worked with the artwork from some of his favorite songs, like "Without You."

To end the day, Represent hosted a party at The West Hollywood EDITION, capturing the essence of the Strip as the musical Mecca it once was. Guests included Marta Pozzan, Mike Majalk, Nick Vial, Khaleel Aqrsbawi, Derrick Freske, Calvyn Justus, Skylar Gisondo and Caity Babs who all enjoyed the tunes of DJ Yahdy Sensei who played snippets from some of MÖTLEY CRÜE’s most popular songs such as "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Smokin' in the Boys Room".
