Passing for Human
Gallery-goers were snapping phone photos of the #relatable cartoons, in the sweaty clump that filled the small L.E.S. space. “Haha, I hate my life”, I heard someone say upon viewing a piece that depicted a conversation between a man and woman about mismatched romantic expectations.
“My Instagram is kind of like a diary. [I drew these] as they happened to me,” Finck told me. Her illustrations of female characters being subject to “manspreading” and “mansplaining” skillfully emphasize latent inequality in everyday situations. Several images lament dating in the internet age and position a woman’s search for intimacy as fundamentally incompatible with typical male tendencies. It’s worth noting the hilarious contrast between Finck’s subject matter and the men at the opening who were mansplaining it to their dates.
