Marine's Manic Soul Machine

This season’s shows have barely begun, but Paris Fashion Week has already been swept off it’s feet by one individual, the ingenue of the industry, Marine Serre. We don’t need to convince you of her talents, though Serre is still green in the industry, the designer has definitely held her ground— winning last year’s LVMH prize, and successfully shifting full focus to her namesake brand from its former status split between that and her (enviable) day job working under Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga.

We had spoken to Serre while she was still in the running for LVMH regarding her collection, Radical Call for Love— a remarkable collection, cerebral and articulate, well worth the win. She stood out amongst the other young designers for her dedication to depicting a thoughtful take on traditional versus modern— for fashion, an idea (and often an issue) that proves timelessly topical. She translated this conflict with something unseen before— her style was smart, updated, culturally and socially sensitive— and very chic, all at once. And this season, for her debut catwalk collection, she has continued to astound us all.

The collection is called, Manic Soul Machine— but it might be more accurate to read between the lines— or, the looks— specifically, pointing to one key piece, printed with the word, “FUTUREWEAR”. If anyone in fashion can somehow come up with current, brilliant branding, it would be Serre. She still included her trademark crescent moon, alongside many of her other hallmark aesthetics, although this time we saw them woven into the attire with a mastery that had an obvious sense of maturity. And this is Marine Serre— in merely six months, she’s grown up fast, though for each speedy stride, somehow, she hasn’t skipped a single step.

Escaping the Glass Cage
