Coach x Hetrick-Martin: Celebrating Pride with Fran Tirado

How are you doing today and what kind of headspace are you in presently?

Today is one of those days where I wake up, take my meds with a cold brew, and fire off on all cylinders working on nine projects at once. It’s not the most methodical madness, but I’ve learned to love it.

How was it like working with the Coach team and the rest of the cast? It looked like such a fun day!

Everyone on set, from the producers, to the nail techs, to the stylists were so considerate, intentional, and kind when it came to making everyone feel fab and affirmed. Cold day to be on the beach, but they made it easy!

What does the “courage to be real” message mean to you?

Quiet the voices in your head that want to please others and suppress your realness. Reconsider the things that have been taught to you, cultured into you, the beliefs that stay dormant in your mind. There is a cavern of a difference between what you *think* you feel and what you actually feel.

Quiet the voices in your head that want to please others and suppress your realness.

How do you implement that message into your daily life?

I’m actually terrible at implementing realness in my everyday because I’m a serial people-pleaser. But I’ve done a lot of work to show up as full as myself as I can, let anxiety take a backseat, and make decisions out of love instead of fear.

How important is it for you to continue being a representative voice for queer visibility and transness?

I’ve learned, the hard way I might add, that advocacy of any kind isn’t being a representative or telling truth from your single perspective. Sometimes your story lends itself to an impactful narrative, and this is always a case-by-case basis. But usually showing up for marginalized communities means working with a collective, providing access for people other than yourself, educating those that your community doesn’t want to, and providing platforms for a multiplicity of perspectives.

Being a leader and advocate in your community, what advice would you give to younger people looking to follow in your footsteps?

Don’t do it alone. Find people that are as excited as you are about core issues and learn, learn, learn! Join organizing groups or initiatives and clock the hours on the work. Don’t just show up with a plan, an expectation, or a motive — find your community and create an intention together.
